This is the time of year when termites swarm and a lot of homeowners become aware of a termite infestation in their home. Termite swarmers are approximately 3/8" long and are greyish to black in color with transparent wings. These winged termites are the reproductive members of the colony and will eventually drop their wings, pick a mate and try to start a new colony. Many people mistake swarming termites for flying ants. Termites have straight bodies and straight atenae with two pairs of wings all equal in length. Ants on the other hand have a pinched waist, elbowed antenae and the bottom pair of wings are shorter than the top pair. In order to see all four wings, you'll have to spread them apart with your fingers. As always, it's best to call in a professional to identify the pest, so call Maxim Exterminators for a free inspection and evaluation at (631) 584-2121.
